About us

A way of living, served at the table

Sushi do Edu is not just a restaurant, nor just a family business. It is the expression of a real life, built day by day by Edu and Juliana.

Before everything, the sea

The ocean came first

Long before the restaurant, long before Portugal, came the trips to Itajaí, in Santa Catarina — to fetch fish, to fetch ingredients. That is where Edu's deep relationship with surfing was born, a connection that lives on to this day.

The sea teaches that everything has its time. It teaches you to wait, to observe, to respect greater forces. Those same principles live in every detail of the experience: nothing at Sushi do Edu feels rushed, because the philosophy of the sea does not mix with anxiety.

"I didn't find sushi. Sushi found me." — Edu

Before sushi, there was the sea

At two years old, the surfboard was already part of the story.

Edu’s connection with the sea began in childhood. In this photograph, at just two years old, he is already on the beach holding a surfboard — an early encounter with surfing that would stay with him throughout his life.

Before sushi, there were already the ocean, freedom and beach culture. That bond with the sea is still present in the way Edu lives, creates and welcomes people today in Buarcos.

Edu & Juliana

A brand born of complementarity

Sushi do Edu does not exist without Juliana. Everything is built together — decisions come from shared living, conversation, the sea, the mountains, shared silence.

創

Edu

Creation, flow and vision. Edu expresses the soul of the house through cooking, surfing, paragliding and hospitality. Flying demands absolute presence — and that same presence comes to the counter: each piece made to order is a meeting of technique, intuition and emotion.

結

Juliana

Grounding, balance and warmth. Juliana expresses the same philosophy through organisation, the joint building of the business and her artistic craft of macramé — handmade art that echoes the organic, artisanal feel of the whole space.

Made by hand, right here

Where soul takes shape

At Sushi do Edu, our story can also be seen on the walls. The macramé pieces that give our space its character are original creations by Ju, handmade through Soul Macramê Arte.

Cotton threads, wood and natural elements take shape knot by knot. Each one brings texture, lightness and a little of Ju’s personality into the restaurant.

From the plate to the walls, a little of our story lives in every detail.

Art at Sushi do Edu

Sushi at the table. Art on the walls.

At Sushi do Edu, the experience also lives in what surrounds you. Among the works displayed in the restaurant are original pieces by Meridy Volz, an expressionist-impressionist artist known for intense colour, texture and the human figure.

With more than six decades of artistic practice, Meridy brings references from Japanese art into her work. In 2024 she received the Gold Medal at the 14th International Small-Format Art Salon in Figueira da Foz, and in 2025 presented the solo exhibition “Um Coração Vibrante” at the CAE.

Our roots

The legacy that guides us

There is a quiet layer of this brand born of Edu's relationship with his father — a deeply human, simple, wise figure, one of the only people who believed in the sushi from the very start. From him come the values that run through everything we do: truth, honesty, empathy, calm and respect. And it is completed by the fundamental presence of his mother, the source of unconditional affection, intuition and that welcoming sensitivity that turns every detail into an embrace and gives this project its true soul of home.

That is why there is no artificial luxury here, no manufactured speech. Guests are not treated as numbers, tables or operational flow — they are received as presence. The experience is built together, in conversation.

We want every person to leave feeling something different: lighter, more present, more connected to themselves. That is the real experience — and perhaps exactly what makes it impossible to replicate.

Love is the Soul of the Business — not a slogan, but the invisible structure of everything.
